Hello. I was recently contacted by my daughters school because they think she has a problem with her speech. Their recommendation is to have her meet with the school speech therapist for a half hour every week. I am just wondering if that is enough time to address her issues or if I should ask that they meet with her more days a week or even if I should seek outside help? Has anyone else had any similar experiences? Thanks!

Hi! It really depends on how severe the speech issue. I would ask them to explain clearly, exactly what issues will be worked on. I will say that we always had a private evaluation as well. The private therapists always looked a little bit deeper and pointed out needs that the school either wouldn’t recognize because she didn’t score low enough, or that they just didn’t address. In our daughter’s case though, the needs were pretty significant so we wanted to be sure we had the whole picture. Also- I think that 30 minutes a week being sufficient depends on how many students are in that session with them. In my experience, if there were 3-4 students, not a whole lot was being addressed in that half hour window. I hope this helps!

@jssouth – Thank you for your feedback! I don’t think her problem is too severe but I think I will consider getting another opinion as well just to be sure all her needs are being addressed, thank you for that recommendation. Her weekly 30 minute session will be one-on-one so perhaps it will be enough time to really make some progress. Thanks again!
